As part of government efforts to curb migration, the salary requirements for UK visas have increased significantly.

The record number of 745,000 immigrants to the UK in 2022, the last full year for which statistics are available, was deemed "far too high" by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

As part of government efforts to curb migration, the salary requirements for UK visas have increased significantly.

What is the minimum wage required of applicants for UK visas?

The majority of individuals who wish to work in the UK must still apply for a visa using the points-based system (PBS).

However, they will require a job offer with a higher salary as of April 11, 2024. They now have to make at least £38,700, which is almost 50% more than the previous minimum of £26,200.

Certain jobs, like those in the health and social care sectors and among teachers paid according to national pay scales, are exempt from the threshold. However, caregivers employed abroad are not permitted to bring their dependents.

The government was criticized for not addressing the UK's labor shortages when the plans were unveiled by organizations like the CBI and the Royal College of Nursing.

However, Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister at the time, maintained that any labor market gaps brought about by the changes would "be filled by British workers."

What are the rules about family visas?

If you wish to live with a relative who is legally permitted to be in the UK for a period longer than six months, you will require a family visa.

In the year ending in September 2023, 82,395 family-related visas were granted, according to official statistics.

You can apply to live with your:

  • spouse or partner
  • fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner
  • child
  • parent
  • relative who will provide long-term care for you
  • You have to demonstrate a good knowledge of English, and meet the minimum income threshold

This was initially due to rise to £38,700 - a sharp increase from the previous £18,600 figure.

But after warnings the new rules risked separating families, the government dropped the new minimum to £29,000.

The amount will increase in the future, however, first to £34,500 and then £38,700. Mr Sunak said the higher threshold would be reached "in early 2025".

Anyone renewing an existing family visa will not have to meet the new earnings threshold, the Home Office has confirmed.

How does the points-based system work?

A skilled worker visa requires 70 points to be awarded to an applicant. Speaking English and having a job offer above the minimum skill level earn you 50 points each.

The last 20 points can be earned by earning a PhD in a relevant field, working in a field where jobs are scarce, or earning a higher salary.

Generally speaking, the cost of a skilled visa ranges from £719 to £1,500.

For each year of their stay, visa applicants must additionally pay an additional healthcare surcharge. The amount may differ, but as of April 2024, the standard annual charge is £1,035 (previously £624).

What is the 'shortage occupation list' ?

These jobs have a lower salary threshold, making it easier for applicants to gain enough points to get a visa.

The list includes:

  • health and care workers
  • pharmacists
  • graphic designers
  • construction workers
  • vets

Employers used to be able to pay foreign workers 80% of the usual "going rate" to fill these positions.

Between September 2023 and the end of September 2023, 486,107 study visas were issued by the government.

The US, Nigeria, and Pakistan were the next most popular countries for student visa applicants, with half of those going to Indian and Chinese nationals.

Postgraduate students may also apply for visas for qualifying dependents, such as children under the age of eighteen, their spouse or civil partner, or both.

Dependants received 152,980 visas in the year that ended in September 2023.

However, unless their course is classified as a research program, international postgraduate students will not be allowed to bring dependents starting in January 2024.

Under a graduate visa, students who have already finished their degree can work in the UK for a period of two years (three years for those with a doctorate).

Excluding dependents, 104,501 such visas were granted in the year ending in September 2023.

How has Brexit changed immigration?

Prior to Brexit, residents of the UK and the EU were free to travel to any EU nation to live, work, or study without a visa.

But when the UK left the EU on January 1, 2021, this freedom of movement came to an end.

Net EU migration was -86,000 in the year ending June 2023, which indicates that more EU citizens left the UK than arrived.

The difference between those coming and those going, or net migration, for non-EU citizens was 768,000.

There was a net migration of -10,000 British nationals, meaning that more of them left the country than returned.
